Cognitive Biases and the Missouri Compromise
This lesson plan uses the Missouri Compromise as a framework for teaching middle schoolers about two Cognitive Biases, the Confirmation Bias and the In-group Bias. The Confirmation Bias is our tendency to interpret information in a way that confirms our preexisting beliefs or hypotheses. The In-group Bias causes people to view members of their group in a more positive light than outsiders, without good reason.
